We create imaginative and beautiful hotels.
Blakes London is one of the most enduring and enjoyable hotels in the world. Visionary and innovative, it's the blueprint for fashionable small hotels worldwide.
Blakes Amsterdam is a work of art, where exquisite Dutch traditional architecture has been given warmth, colour and spice from the golden age of the Dutch East India Company.
The Hempel, London's first minimalist hotel, has been described as "a space of wisdom at the heart of life itself".
New hotels opening in 2012 include the Grosvenor House Apartments on Park Lane; two brand new boutique business hotels for the La Suite Group in London. Set in the Brazilian rainforest, Warapuru is a stunning new piece of contemporary architecture and luxury hotel design. An awe-inspiring monolithic work of minimalist grandeur, opens in 2015 along with The Garcha Santiago, Chile, The Baccarat Hotel Morocco and another signature property in Singapore.
BLAKES LONDON – the signature hotel restaurant
The designer's sense of theatre brings the restaurant alive. Anouska Hempel's intimate bar, many-splendoured Chinese Room and the subtle, sophisticated and sexy dining room are a triumph. From the trademark screens, which palter with dimensions and create private dining spaces, the unsurpassed private collection of Thai mountain tribal costumes on the walls, to each succulent detail of how the food - Anouska Hempel's food - is presented, this is an internationally-recognised jewel of a restaurant likened to: "an opium den managed by Coco Chanel."
BLAKES AMSTERDAM – the hotel restaurant
Anouska Hempel restored the oven doors and original brick floor of the bakery that flourished here from 1787 until 1811, with its warmth, comfort and permanence; then made a restaurant that stimulated the senses. Disciplined rows of lamps against dramatic black and white; a black lacquered floor to reflect, and repeat, glimmers of light; the exciting geometry of table settings with memories of blue and white Nanking cargo china form the backdrop for eclectic food that cherry-picks from East and West.
DANESFIELD HOUSE – the oak-panelled dining room
In this country house hotel, Anouska Hempel has created the ultimate carte blanche; a beautiful, bleached oak-panelled dining room of linen, chalk and cream. The perfect backdrop for Aiden Byrne, the youngest Michelin starred chef, acclaimed for his brilliantly inventive cooking. He shares with Anouska Hempel, the love of theatre and design. This very private dining room shows how traditional grand country-house elegance can be brought up to date, with exceptional results.
TOM AIKENS, Tom Aikens restaurant, London
As the youngest chef ever to hold two Michelin stars, Tom Aikens is a client whose unpretentious perfectionism in food is reflected in the restaurant which bears his name: Anouska Hempel has made him a modern, timeless restaurant in Chelsea. Colours are neutral and natural, while wooden blinds and screens provide intimacy from the outside world and from the busy kitchen. Clean, contemporary lines and dark wood set against white walls, make this restaurant simple and stylish.
WEDDING MARQUEE – in a secret garden setting
A secret garden cloaked in black. The monumental structure encloses a precise and beautifully designed garden, which is turned from an outdoor room into magical space full of fantasy, full of fun. The marquee entrances reveal a dark and opulent world. Guests glide past the forty hornbeams to feast and dance. Surrounded by proud catalpas, the Belgian hardstone table shimmers with the finest silver and crystal. A canopy of lanterns sparkle like stars creating a bustling and bohemian atmosphere.
I-THAI – a sculptural aethetic restaurant
Anouska Hempel's original design was conceived as an exercise in elemental purity - white floating walls, below which may be glimpsed the dancing feet of waiters; a long black diving board of a bar, suspended above a grey mercurial sea; a fireplace submerged in a jade room. Dishes celebrating Italian and Thai cuisines were designed by Anouska Hempel to follow through the sculptural aesthetic of the restaurant, to give the diner an experience of what was immediately acclaimed as an iconic achievement.
The design, atmosphere and style of a restaurant are as much a part of its success as the chef. Details matter: the lighting; the quality of the table linen, glass and cutlery. Service: the sense that you are in the hands of consummate professionals. Anouska Hempel applies her designers eye from the interiors, through to the presentation of each and every dish. Having designed several top international restaurants from modern minimalist to truly theatrical, her concepts are always individual, imaginative and radiate her signature originality throughout, in Blakes-London, The Bakers Oven - Blakes Amsterdam, I-Thai, The Hempel – London, The Oak Room, Danesfield, Marlow, Buckinghamshire, Ishy – Jakarta and Tom Aikens - London.
